MOVING TOWARD SEA OF COMPLEXITY BUT SMARTNESS IN TECHNOLOGY

The smartness is making the technologies so much intelligent that they should keep systems or equipment working safe, healthy, green and sustainable

Because of quick changes in technology landscape, the things are getting more complex but technology is getting smart and intelligent. Complex means large systems integrated with many small and large devices and systems having distributed and centralized monitoring and control platforms intelligent enough to automatically sense and correct.

We discuss here what parameters and features make technologies smart and what are next generation technologies and what are their benefits and challenges.

First big change is the movement of technologies toward smart technologies. What has made technologies smart and what are smart technologies is a big debate. Smart is a buzzword being used in every filed of technology like Smart grid, smart building, smart energy, Smart car, smart meter, smart lap top, smart LED, Smart mobile etc. There is a need to study those parameters which make any technology smart. There is no standard available on the basis of which we can analyze that technology is smart or not but we can discuss some important parameters and features which make any technology smart.

Previous technology era was reliable and cost effective but new era is intelligent and green. Green means low or zero carbon emission, energy efficient and environment friendly technologies and intelligence means that technologies should be intelligent enough to sense the health of the system and correct it automatically or convey the message and alarm to pre-empt or react to avoid any catastrophic or breakdown situation. Now we see that what the word smart has brought changes in the technologies.

First thing which makes any technology smart is intelligence. Intelligence means automatic sensing, monitoring and control. Take example of smart Grid. Grid will be smart which senses the voltage, current and power and if any fault occurs, it monitors this fault and then controls the parameters. Smart grid is an intelligent grid. The benefits associated with the Smart Grid include; more efficient transmission of electricity, quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances, reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers, reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates, Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems, better integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy systems and improved security.

Smart mobile is intelligent, smart building is intelligent and smart home is intelligent. Second thing which makes any technology smart is modular which means that modules can be added to scale any system and modules can be changed if they are faulty and troubleshooting is done by changing of modules only. Things are getting smaller in size and lighter in weight because of modular approach.  Third thing which makes technology smart is flexibility and interoperability which means that the technology can be easily integrated with other systems by plug and play. Take example of smart mobile which can be connected to any computer, LED screen, Bluetooth speaker or wired speakers through USB standard cable. Smart grid is that grid which is intelligent and accepts the power supplies form all kinds of power generation sources like solar, wind, biomass and diesel etc.

Fourth factor for being smart is efficient which means highly efficient. High efficiency means that system should have lower losses as possible and should meet five digit 99.999%  efficiency. Fifth factor of being smart is zero carbon and zero Green House Gas emissions. It means that the technology should have zero carbon emissions and zero GHG emissions. Technology should be sustainable and green. It should help in reduction of GHG and thus bringing down atmospheric temperature to minimum to reduce the risk of climate change.

Sixth factor to be smart is sustainable which means that the technology should not damage and pollute the environment and should not inflict any loss to human and its environment through its use and operation.Seventh factor to be smart is that the technology should automatically and remotely monitor and control the equipment and system and not only it control, it should atomically correct corrects faults and keep system running with zero break down.

Apart from many benefits of smart technologies, there are challenges also. First challenge is the shorter product life cycle and it is getting shorter and shorter day by day and users have to be vigilant about with new changes and make available budgets for future up-gradations. Second ...
