Fertilizer is either a natural or artificial substance containing the chemical elements that improve growth and productiveness of plants.

What Fertilizer Do?

Fertilizers enhance the natural fertility of the soil by replacing the chemical elements taken from the soil by previous crops. They supply the elements in readily available forms for rapid growth of plants. Most fertilizers supply just nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium because the other chemicals are needed in much lower quantities and are generally available in most soils.

The numbers on a bag of fertilizer tell you the percentages of available Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium found in the bag. So 12-8-10 fertilizer has 12-percent Nitrogen, 8-percent Phosphorous and 10-percent Potassium.

Types of Fertilizer

Organic fertilizers are composed of naturally occurring biodegradable materials made with: animal manure plus, compost, seaweed, peat moss, mineral deposits and other ingredients from nature.

Inorganic fertilizer or synthetic fertilizer comes in several different forms - liquid, powdered, and granular. Often it is a brew of concentrated ammonia diluted with water. Rock phosphate and potassium are sometimes added to make a compound fertilizer.
